Aleading British Regency designer and arbiter of taste, Thomas Hope (1769–1831), son of John Hope, produced a suite of rooms for his London house, including the “Egyptian or Black Room,” devised as a setting for his Egyptian antiquities. Hope’s pioneering book on interior design used line engravings to encourage accurate imitations. One of a pair from Hope’s “Egyptian Room,” this monumental couch is richly ornamented with gilt bronze elements which mix, in the spirit of eclectic design advocated by Piranesi in his Diverse maniere,Greek and Egyptian decorative forms.
