Piranesi’s extremely unconventional solution for the Aventine altar is emphasized by comparison with this earlier proposal for the Aventine scheme by Carlo Marchionni, an architect who worked on the Villa for Cardinal Albani (from 1746 onward) and the Sacristy of St Peter’s (1776–86).
