Chimneypiece designed for John Hope, from diverse maniere d’adornare..., 1769
As in many of the plates of the Diverse maniere, Piranesi set the Hope chimneypiece within a decorative interior which drew on antique sources, such as the military trophies of Marius (then on the Capitoline Hill) and the exquisite, trellis-like wall paintings from Herculaneum and Pompeii.
