Piranesi’s letter, addressed to the leading British collector of classical sculpture, Charles Townley, included a sketch of the Warwick Vase, but made no reference to it in the text. In his reply, which survives with this letter, Townley praised the artist’s unique ability to revive such a “Phoenix.”
